Hannah ‘Hype’ Whittaker and Jennifer “Big Trouble” Pena won medals for the second year running at the AETF European Championships. After finishing second in last year’s team sparring competition, the taekwondo athletes took individual medals in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Both won bronze for sparring – Hannah in the -68kg Division and Jennifer in the -50kg category. Hannah was also honoured to continue in her role as the England Women’s Team Captain, but there was to be no medal for the squad this time.
Considering 591 competitors were battling at the Arena Armeec, it was an amazing achievement by Hannah and Jennifer, and while the rest of the Team Warrior squad didn’t win any medals, everyone who travelled to Sofia with England Head Coach Johann De Silva can be pleased with their performances.
Ben Halpin and Shane O’Rourke were both part of the six-man sparring teams, while 2015 ITF World Vice Champion Adam ‘Ace’ Bonwick also represented ITF England – as did Calvin Thomas, who was making his first appearance for the national side.
Johann de Silva was delighted with his Team Warrior students. “While Hannah and Jennifer won medals at the European Championships, all six Team Warrior athletes can be proud of their efforts – they all performed to a very high standard and gained valuable experience which they can take into the ITF World Championships in Dublin this October.”
